Be the Bee: St Paisios and a Bookmark for the Heart
Share
In our busy, often noisy world, it’s easy to be overwhelmed by what is broken, painful, or discouraging. Yet, Saint Paisios of Mount Athos - one of the most beloved elders of our modern era - offers a simple and profound reminder:
“Be the bee, not the fly.”
The bee looks for sweetness, the fly looks for filth. You choose what you see.
Saint Paisios lived a life of humility, simplicity, and deep love for others. Through his words and example, he taught that even in the most difficult moments, we are called to seek out what is good, pure, and life-giving - to be like the bee that flies past all the dirt to find the one blooming flower.
A Tiny Reminder, Stitched with Intention

As a reminder of his gentle wisdom, I’ve created a small cross-stitch embroidery pattern - a bookmark stitched with the words “Be the Bee”. It’s a simple project, perfect for those new to cross-stitch, or anyone wanting to work on a small project of prayerful creativity.
Tuck it into your prayer book, Bible, or a favourite spiritual reading. Let it gently remind you each time you open the pages: seek the good, dwell on the sweet, and let your thoughts follow the fragrance of holiness, as you journey towards Christ.
More Than Just a Craft
At Sew Orthodox, every design begins with prayer and intention. This little bee is more than decoration - it’s a quiet nudge toward spiritual mindfulness. It’s theology in thread, encouraging us to look for beauty, not bitterness; to turn our hearts toward hope, not despair.
As you stitch, say a prayer. For yourself, for others, for a heart that learns to see the world with the light of Christ. One simple bookmark, one simple message - and a whole change in perspective.
